John Coplans Self Portrait

John Coplans is known for his black and white, nude self portraits. This photo may turn heads at first and just been seen as a naked man. It caught my eye because of the age of the man in the photo. Clearly, the man is older but I still find the picture beautiful. Coplans doesn't show his face which helps the viewer not focus on a specific identity or person. The camera lingers over every imperfection, such as the wrinkles, skin spots, sagging skin, and splotches of hair.
This picture also shows Coplans use of humor and wit but also his intelligence and passion.
He makes himself more brilliant and beautiful than modern pictures that show men and women with their "perfect" bodies.

  1. bodies are facinating, we all have one, we all like what some people look like, so why can we, or how do we say "ew" when we see someone who we dont find attractive, there the same as us. i really enjoy this photo, for its raw un-obtrusive nature, you have to look to see the beautiful body and you have to seek out the perfections or imperfections, for instance for a guy he has really nice feet.

  2. I agree with you 100%. This photo really shows that everyone is beautiful no matter how old, how skinny, or how built you are.

  3. That's interesting. He's fragmented into pieces as well--as if perhaps we define people by their body parts--fetishize them? I don't know. Getting old is difficult--people look at you differently even if you are the same as you ever were.

  4. Did he photograph himself or did someone else photograph him?

  5. Does the person seem ashamed of his/her body? Could the artist be representing the shame of getting old?

  6. He had other people photograph him, but he set himself up exactly how he wanted and told the photographers what to do, instead of the other way around like in most cases.

  7. I don't think he's ashamed. I think he feels beautiful, with all his imperfections.

  8. I dont think he is ashamed of his body cause he wanted to have this done. I think it shows that just because your body isnt perfect doesnt mean you shouldnt cherish it.
